Chapter 6
THE REST of Thanksgiving was awesome, except for that damned phone call. For most of the day, every time Carlos had touched or even looked at Billy Joe, a low-wattage tingling zipped through him, like when he’d stuck his tongue to a battery as a kid. Even now he could feel it, sitting in the second bedroom under a sheet draped between the sofa and the desk, knowing Billy Joe was just outside waiting for him.
Carlos had a sleeping bag from when he was a kid that he used as a couch blanket in the winter. He’d zipped it up and settled Tyler with a pillow and a flashlight. They had turned off all the lights, and Tyler had insisted that Carlos read The Velveteen Rabbit. It was supposed to settle Tyler to sleep, but it wasn’t working.
“Close your eyes and I’ll read you Clifford, and then you go to sleep. Okay?” Carlos set the first book aside and picked up the second. This one seemed to have the desired effect, and by the time he was done, Tyler was asleep. Carlos climbed out of the tent, left the room, and closed the door.
“Is he out?” Billy Joe asked as Carlos approached.
“Yeah. He’s finally asleep. I think he was so overstimulated with everything that happened today that he didn’t want it to end.” Carlos sank down on the sofa. “He asked me if we were having Thanksgiving next week too.” He grinned. “I told him that it was once a year and that next month it was Christmas.”
“He barely remembers that from last year. Mom and Dad gave him a few presents, and I got him what I could. It wasn’t much, and he didn’t really understand and barely sat still to open his presents.” Billy Joe sat down next to Carlos. “My dad bought Tyler a gun. It wasn’t real, but the dang thing looked it.”
“Was it a squirt gun or something?” Carlos took Billy Joe’s hand, that tingling having shifted to concern.
“Bubbles. But it gave me the creeps, and as soon as we were done opening presents, Dad took Tyler outside to play bubbles. Tyler would blow bubbles with the thing, and my dad would pretend to be shot.” Billy Joe quivered. “It was sick, and my mother went along with it. She actually told me that Tyler needed to learn about protecting our second amendment rights. He was two! I hid the damn thing as soon as Christmas was over, and when Dad wasn’t around, I smashed it and threw the whole thing away.” Billy Joe groaned and leaned back. His eyes had bags under them.
“You need to get some rest.” Carlos was tired as well.
“Yeah, I probably do.” Billy Joe seemed to be waiting. He took a deep breath. “I guess I owe you an explanation about my father.”
Carlos had been curious. Billy Joe’s comment about white-sheeted pockets hadn’t gone unnoticed. “I think you need to tell me what’s going on.”
Billy Joe nodded. “You probably guessed something of what I’m going to tell you.
